National League MVP – Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado Rockies. This may come as a shock to people who always look at St. Louis Cardinals Albert Pujols as the automatic preseason pick for MVP. But anyone in the know understands the greatness of this hidden gem in the mountains of Colorado. The 25-year-old Gonzalez will be a legitimate threat to win the Triple Crown over the next few seasons. Last year, he hit 34 home runs with 117 RBIs and a .336 average. Throw in 111 runs scored and 26 stolen bases, as well as being a plus defensive outfielder, and you have the most well-rounded player in all of baseball.
The sale jerseys can survive with a platoon of Brian Anderson and Dewayne Wise in center (with Anderson getting more playing time thanks to gold glove-caliber defense), but the lack of a “traditional” leadoff hitter will force Ozzie Guillen to get creative. In the end, I’d expect Chris Getz to get the majority of at-bats from the No. 1 spot in the order this year, but he may not slide in there until late April or early May, whenever Guillen realizes that he’s a better long-term option than Wise or Anderson.
I would keep instant replay away from judgment calls such as whether a runner is safe or out. I would also not use it for balls and strikes. This way, the human element remains in the game and replay is only used when it is absolutely necessary. A play will only come under review when the umpires feel it necessary to do so. Umpires will be evaluated in the same manner they are now. Those that make too many mistakes will not be available to work postseason games and thus will lose out on bigger paychecks.
Arizona is 6-4 in its last 10 games and just a half a game behind San francisco in the NL West. The Diamondbacks continue to be one of the biggest surprises this season with a record of 39-32. They are 17-17 on the road and 22-15 at home.
To that point, Detroit’s own trio of relievers have equaled the task, as Ryan Perry, Fernando Rodney, and Bobby Seay have also gone 7.1 innings without yielding a run.
Unfortunately for the White Sox, none of these players jumps out as an enticing option to pick up Peavy’s early-season starts. But as long as Peavy doesn’t miss too big a portion of the early part of the season, a few starts from Harrell, Humber, Nunez, etc. probably won’t seriously hurt the team’s chances at making it back to the playoffs.
He pitched into the sixth inning, giving up four total runs (two unearned). By the time he left the game, Texas led 4-3, but the Cardinals scored in the inning to tie the game. Texas took the lead in the top of the seventh but eventually lost the game in the 11th.
